China Resources Holdings and its hope towns

China Resources (Holdings) Company Limited (hereinafter “CR”) is a multi-business holding enterprise group registered and operating in Hong Kong. In order to unite with democrats supporting the anti-Japanese war in Hong Kong and the whole world, collect and manage contributions and materials donated for anti-Japanese troops and produce military supplies and medicines, its predecessors, Liow & Company was established in Hong Kong in 1938. During the liberation war, China Resources Company maneuvered to break through the blockade and procured and delivered urgently needed supplies to the Chinese mainland, substantially supported the Three Campaigns and the River-Crossing Campaign till the liberation of the whole of China. In 1948, Liow & Company was renamed China Resources Company. China Resources, in spite of numerous hardships, sent more than 350 well-known democrats and more than 700 cultural celebrities and patriotic overseas Chinese from Hong Kong to the Northeast Liberated Areas, ensuring the successful opening of the first session of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CIPCC) of China. After the founding of PRC, CR has set up a trade bridge between China and the rest of the world. Its supervision was transferred to the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission in 2003 when it was listed as a key state-owned enterprise.

In recent years, CR donates more than 100 million yuan each year to such public welfare undertakings as education development, disaster relief, poverty alleviation and so on. In response to the state’s call that “industry promotes agriculture, and urban areas support rural development” and for the purpose of performing its social responsibility and paying back to the society, CR proposed the idea of building hope towns in destitute areas and old revolutionary bases by utilizing its diversified operational advantages and donations from itself and its staff. CR hope towns, as an indication of CR’s pursuit beyond profit as a central enterprise, have created an important platform for the 360,000 CR workers to realize CR’s business philosophy of “letting us act hand in hand to change our life”. So tar, CR has built several CR hope towns in Bose, Guangxi; Xibaipo, Hebei; Shaoshan, Hunan; and Gutian, Fujian, etc.
Located in Youjiang District, Bose City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Xibeile Area is where CR’s hope town dream began. This area consists of four natural villages, namely Dongyu, Tangxiong, Naping and Nashui, with seven small villagers’ groups. Started in 2008 and completed in September the next year, the hope town where perfect prefectural and comprehensive services, cultural and educational institutions and medical institutions were provided, has changed villagers' living conditions. In 2011, the working focus of the hope towns were shifted from environmental reform to industry support. We have reasons to believe that soon Bose hope town will become a more beautiful and affluent new town.
At present, moved and inspired by CR’s spirit, a growing number of enterprises have started to focus their attention on the construction of new villages and more and more partners of CR have begun to participate in its hope town project. On Mach 18, 2011, the CR Charitable Foundation held a large evening party with the theme of "CRV’s Night" in Shenzhen. Nearly 300 representatives of CR’s partners, including the Vanke Group, China Construction Bank (CBC), Dongfang Electric Corporation Limited, Credit Suisse Group and other prominent enterprises were present, donating a total of 50 million yuan which were all applied to the construction of hope towns.
CR’s hope town project provided a spiritual compass for its 360,000 staff by enabling them to truly realize that their own achievements could directly turn into a force that can speed up social development. The project also provided an opportunity for CR’s staff from different industries to come together and experience as well as change the daily life of Chinese grass-roots farmers, so as to better suit its business philosophy of “letting us act hand in hand to change our life”.
