From August 9 to 12, Save the Children held a summer camp in Beijing. Themed with inclusive education, it has attracted more than 30 children, parents, and teachers across the country. Through various activities, typical children and physically challenged ones were brought together, demonstrating their equal access to education.
Games, dramas and workshops were designed to help children better understand their rights, concept of equality and inclusive education. During a visit to Radio Beijing International, they also participated in training sessions on communication and writing skills. All the children in the camp, physically challenged or not, quickly became good friends, showing genuine ‘inclusion’ at work.
Training was also provided to parents to stress their role in inclusive education. “These sessions aim to teach parents how to treat all children equally and with respect, build up their confidence, and help them become part of the society,” said a trainer. Meanwhile, parents found the camp very rewarding and educational as well.
Inclusive education hopes to break down the barriers preventing children with special needs from learning side by side with typical children, according to Save the Children. The initiative is gaining ground in China in provinces including Sichuan, Yunnan, and Xinjiang.
