Sanmenxia tackles poverty through rural tourism
China Daily, 04-18-2017
Rural tourism has become an effective weapon in Sanmenxia city's war on poverty, local authorities claimed on March 25.
Poverty alleviation has been a key focus of Chinese President Xi Jinping since he assumed office in 2013, and it has been a national policy since 2015 requiring local governments to take targeted measures to ensure that assistance reaches poverty-stricken villages and households.
Sanmenxia in Central China's Henan province is taking an innovative approach to eradicating local poverty, focusing on developing rural tourism as a means to empower rural residents while raising their income levels.
The government has invested in sprucing up many scenic resorts and villages in recent years, which are starting to attract a growing number of tourists.
The region now boasts two state-level demonstration villages for rural tourism, and 14 provincial-level well-preserved ancient villages.
"Developing rural tourism can optimize the structure of the local tourism industry, and help with China's targeted poverty alleviation policy," said deputy mayor Li Qinghong.
Li made the remark at Yuxi Bicaoyuan Garden in Xinping village, Lushi county, where dozens of reporters and hundreds of avid travellers will experience the charm of Sanmenxia's culture by taking part in an array of activities over the coming days.
The local tourism bureau has mapped out six tourism routes, each of which gives visitors a chance to see the county's scenic spots, leisure farms, ancient villages and folk customs.
Yuxi Baicaoyuan Garden, a 200-hectare ecological park, is another project helping to raise local farmers' income levels by focusing on cultivating plants to be used as ingredients in traditional Chinese medicine.
The garden is supporting the local community in a variety of ways, investing in infrastructure construction, recruiting local farmers for agricultural work, encouraging them to plant lucrative herbs used in TCM, and promoting their produce through e-commerce.
