Some 300 students in Yixian County of Baoding City, north China's Hebei Province, will be the lucky benefactors of a new school campus next semester following the completion of Luminous Primary School, whose renovation was funded by nine middle school students from China and the United States.
The students offered the fund through their charity Luminous Future, which they established last year in the hopes of ensuring educational opportunities for poverty-stricken students in China and promoting China-U.S. cultural exchanges.
"The name itself represents a flicker of light with the power to change the future," said Li Guanghao, co-founder of Luminous Future, who currently studies at the St. Mary's Preparatory School in Michigan.
Once the new school is in place, school-age children from four adjacent villages will be able to receive education from kindergarten through the third grade, saving them the trouble of attending more distant schools or having classes in broken campus buildings.
They decided to engage in refurbishing the school after seeing its disrepair last summer. At that time, it was called the Dalonghua Nantou Primary School. Knowing that the school's fundraiser had already obtained 1.08 million yuan (US$162,000) and was still short 6,000 thousand yuan (US$90,045), they volunteered to raise the money.
The students managed to raise 590,500 yuan (US$88,619) as of last December, when they entrusted the fund to the China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF) to renovate the school buildings and to upgrade facilities. Their cooperation with CSCLF aimed to yield higher efficiency as well as to smooth out the fundraiser's legitimacy issues while operating in China.
On the day of campus completion, the nine Luminous Future founders even brought two nutrition monitors, each costing around 300,000 yuan (US$45,022), hoping that the instruments would help with the students' health. They also plan to build a small library with access to the internet for the students.
"We expect to finish the network layout next year. At that time, we will have video meetings with the students before trying to teach them through the internet," said Li Honglin, another Luminous Future member.
